Journalist Mukesh Chandrakar’s brutal murder has sparked outrage, with Meda Srinivas, Secretary General of the Journalists Democratic Rights Forum (JDRF), condemning the act as a blatant attack on democracy. He demanded swift action from the Chhattisgarh government to ensure justice and safety for journalists, warning that attacks on those exposing the truth reflect a growing authoritarian regime.

Attacks On Journalists: A Threat To Democracy
Meda Srinivas criticized the increasing violence against journalists, questioning whether attacks, harassment, and murders of truth-seekers reflect the principles of democracy. He accused political forces of colluding with mafia groups to intimidate journalists and suppress their work.“Political vultures are emboldened day by day, and the killing of Mukesh Chandrakar by his own associates is a heinous act. This murder exposes the failures of law and order in Chhattisgarh,” said Srinivas.
He also expressed concern over the indifference shown by political parties and the government toward the murder, calling it deeply troubling and urging journalists to unite against such atrocities.
Demands For Justice And Compensation
Srinivas put forth the following demands:Swift Justice: The Chhattisgarh government must take responsibility for the murder and ensure that the culprits are punished without delay through a special court.
Compensation for Family: The government should provide Rs. 1 crore as compensation to Mukesh Chandrakar's family.
Special Protection Law for Journalists: Implementation of a specific law to ensure the safety and security of journalists.
He emphasized that the lack of safety for journalists is a significant concern, warning that united action by journalists could challenge the survival of oppressive regimes.

Srinivas lamented the declining unity among journalists, attributing it to the influence of corporate media. He urged the journalistic community to stand together and protect their rights, asserting that a united press can become a formidable force against oppression.
